Dutch Elm Disease was discovered in two American Elm trees in Lethbridge Alberta in August of 2020. The disease was confirmed with testing by the Alberta Agriculture and Forestry Plant Health Lab and by the CFIA. These trees were considered an isolated case as they were discovered and subsequently removed and disposed of quickly. This was the first case since 1998 in Alberta which was still considered DED free.
Alberta has the largest stand of Dutch Elm Disease free Elms in North America. There are at least 600,000 elms growing in Alberta. These elms are valued at over $2 Billion dollars.

Elm trees should only be pruned while dormant from October 1st through March 31st annually. They should be pruned to keep them healthy and free of deadwood which can harbour the beetle that is known to spread the disease.
“Preventive pruning or tree removal is essential to eliminate breeding material for the elm bark beetles (EBB). Preventive pruning is the systematic removal of dead, damaged, or diseased other than from DED branches from healthy elm trees. If a tree is dead or dying it should be removed. All elm wood must be properly disposed. Keeping elms well-maintained will aid in the control of DED.”
